WHAT IS PILATES?
It’s a method of exercise developed over 80 years ago by Joseph Pilates.
Pilates is a system of exercises using special apparatus. It works by strengthening the core muscles of the body improving posture, flexibility, and mental awareness.
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT TO SEE?
Pilates was designed to create:
- Longer and Leaner Muscles
- Improved Posture
- Increased Core Strength
- Better Balance and Co-ordination
- Improved Flexibility
- Resistance to Injuries
- Rehabilitation of Joint and Back problems
- Improved Sports Performance
HOW LONG BEFORE I START TO SEE RESULTS?
In the words of Pilates himself – “In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference, after 20, you will see the difference and after 30 you’ll have a whole new body…”. Most clients training 2-3 times per week can expect to get tangible results after about 8-10 weeks.
WILL PILATES HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT?
Pilates is very helpful with weight loss because it increases the lean tissue of the body. Increasing metabolism and circulation, Pilates will tone and help the body burn more calories.
Pilates is a low-intensity, muscular, strength, and endurance activity. For a weight loss program, one needs to expend more energy than one takes in. We recommend anyone who wishes to lose a significant amount of weight to increase cardiovascular activity and follow a calorie-controlled diet with Pilates.
CAN I DO PILATES WHILE PREGNANT AND AFTER GIVING BIRTH?
You should always consult your physician first. If you have been taking Pilates prior to your pregnancy then your doctor may clear you to continue. If you have not previously been taking Pilates and don’t have the foundation and basics need then you might want to wait and start after your pregnancy. It can be difficult to grasp the fundamentals with an expanding belly. Once the baby is born and your physician clears you then you may start up an exercise routine and Pilates is great for postnatal mothers. We allow those who have taken Pilates to continue with group classes until their second trimester. Once you are 4 – 5 months along we will ask that you continue with private sessions so we can accommodate and modify for the specific changes in your body.
IS PILATES JUST FOR WOMEN? AS A MAN I FEEL A LITTLE INTIMIDATED TO TRY IT.
Pilates is just as beneficial for men, if not more so. Men generally tend to suffer from tight hamstrings, which lead to lower back problems and bad posture. They also tend to store most of their body fat in the abdomen.
Pilates increases the flexibility of all muscles, particularly the hamstrings. Also, the core toning is very helpful for reducing fat and improving abdominal strength.
PILATES DOESN’T MAKE ME SWEAT, IS IT SUPPOSED TO BE STRENUOUS?
It all depends! The challenge of Pilates is to perform each exercise correctly, not the weight or the repetition of movement. Most people should get an extremely challenging workout (unless we are working to rehabilitate specific injuries). It also depends on the teacher. If you’ve had a bad experience before, come in and try us!
WHY DOES PILATES USE SPRINGS? WHAT’S THE BENEFIT?
The resistance of the springs mimic the action of the muscle, providing more resistance as the muscle works harder. This means the tendons and ligaments are under less strain than under the normal weight and pulley system, but are still being strengthened.
